Known as “los Picos de Europa” (the Peaks of Europe) by those returning to the continent from the Americas, these iconic mountain ranges were the first glimpse of home soil for weary explorers.

Set just a few miles back from the stunning Cantabrian coastline, they provide an awesome backdrop to the vibrant green hills of Northern Spain.

The Picos are criss-crossed by a network of well-maintained, twisty yet quiet roads. A mecca for motorcyclists the world over. Enough tarmac to provide endless riding bliss for all styles. However, for those with a real thirst for adventure, there are awesome opportunities for riding the ancient tracks connecting pueblo to pueblo via breathtaking mountain foothills.

And if the incredible riding isn’t enough, there is so much to sample in this region; awe-inspiring sights, adrenaline-filled adventures and colourful local culture.

Food and drink

Northern Spain is a paradise for food lovers. Fresh local produce allows the traditional dishes of the area to really stand out. The mountain folk from this area pride themselves on their cocidos (stews), washed down with a glass of Rioja or chilled local vino tinto. Another must when visiting the area is to try the locally distilled Orujo.

Local culture

You’ll find plenty of culture and fascinating history in this region. Everything from Gaudi architecture and prehistoric cave paintings, to frequent colourful fiestas throughout the year. The welcoming nature of the locals is just one of the reasons visitors keep returning to this unique area of Spain.

The great outdoors

Probably the greatest draw to this area. Incredible walks through the mountains and villages allow hikers to enjoy the unspoilt flora and fauna. Cantabrian bears and grey wolves are just some of the exciting animals that call the Picos home. Additional activities include:
